AC Milan’s director, Igli Tare, addressed the team’s surprising new strike partnership against Napoli, while firmly asserting that Rafael Leao remains “a crucial asset” for the club, despite the challenges faced this season.
This match is a pivotal moment in the season, as the winning side will significantly bolster their chances of challenging league leaders Inter, with only seven rounds of fixtures remaining.
Tare Defends Leao and Milan’s Strategy
Speaking to DAZN Italia, Tare remarked, “These are two outstanding teams, as the league standings confirm, and we anticipate a spectacular football match tonight. Considering Juventus’s recent victory, the league table is becoming tighter, making a win tonight absolutely fundamental for us.”
With Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic not at full fitness, coach Allegri opted to avoid risking them, instead fielding a new attacking duo of Niclas Fullkrug and Christopher Nkunku.
Tare continued, “We possess numerous excellent strikers, which is why our squad has such depth; therefore, these selection choices are not surprising. The biggest advantage for Allegri today is the wide array of options he has to choose from.
“I generally prefer to look ahead rather than over my shoulder. Playing in a stadium with such an incredible atmosphere is the best experience for any player. We must exert every possible effort to secure a victory tonight.”
Leao has reportedly struggled in the False 9 position and might prefer playing on the left wing, leading to questions about his overall performance this season.
“It feels like we discuss Leao every week, but his quality is beyond question,” Tare replied. “His main issue has been a series of injuries this season that prevented him from performing at his best. After a two-week absence and only a couple of training sessions with the team, we included him because he can still be a game-changer coming off the bench.”
When asked if these setbacks might impact Rafael Leao’s future, the director concluded by affirming, “He has a contract for another two years, and he is a very important player for Milan.”
These two teams have already met twice this season. Milan secured a 2-1 Serie A victory in September, despite a red card for Pervis Estupinan, but Napoli subsequently triumphed 2-0 in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final.
