Alex De Minaur to Clash with Daniil Medvedev in Shanghai Quarters

Sport news

Seventh-seeded Alex De Minaur achieved a significant milestone at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday, securing his 50th tour-level victory of the season by defeating Nuno Borges with a score of 7-5, 6-2. This impressive win propels him into the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament.

De Minaur`s dominant performance saw him hit 19 winners during the one-hour and 47-minute match, marking his seventh career appearance in a Masters 1000 quarterfinal.

He joins an elite group this year, as only world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, with 67 wins, and Taylor Fritz, also with 50 victories, have reached this 50-win benchmark in 2025 before De Minaur. This season already surpasses De Minaur`s previous personal best of 47 wins and two titles, which he achieved in 2024.

The Australian will now face the 16th seed, Daniil Medvedev, in what promises to be a thrilling quarterfinal encounter. Medvedev earned his spot by winning a hard-fought match against Learner Tien, emerging victorious with a 7-6 (6), 6-7 (1), 6-4 scoreline.

In other quarterfinal matchups, 12th-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced after a straightforward 6-4, 6-2 win over eighth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti. Auger-Aliassime is set to play Arthur Rinderknech, who caused an upset by eliminating 15th seed Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 7-6 (5).

World No. 54 Rinderknech has been on a giant-killing run throughout the tournament, notably having knocked out third-seeded Alexander Zverev earlier in the competition.
