Atletico Madrid Secures Verbal Agreement for Ederson, Arsenal Links Diminish

Sport news

Reports indicate that Arsenal are poised to miss out on the signing of highly-rated Atalanta midfielder, Ederson, as he has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to join Atletico Madrid.

The talented Brazilian has garnered significant attention for his impressive performances in Serie A, sparking recent transfer speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal. Previously, a report from Marca, cited by Sport Witness, suggested Arsenal’s interest in Ederson amidst competition from Premier League clubs, including Atletico Madrid.

However, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed via a social media update that Atletico Madrid appears to be leading the race for the 26-year-old midfielder’s signature.

Ederson Agrees Personal Terms with Atletico Madrid Despite Prior Arsenal Interest

Romano’s post detailed that “Atletico Madrid have verbally agreed on personal terms with Éderson as Atalanta midfielder is a top target.” He further clarified that while personal terms are settled, an agreement between the two clubs is still pending, with negotiations reportedly ongoing for a fee in the region of €35-40 million. Ederson’s current contract with Atalanta is set to expire in June 2027.

This potential transfer isn’t the first instance of business between Atletico and Atalanta, as the Spanish club previously secured Ademola Lookman on loan from the Italian side in January, suggesting a clear working relationship between the two clubs.

Assessing Arsenal’s Actual Need for Ederson

While Ederson is undoubtedly a quality player, questions arise about whether Arsenal truly needed to prioritize a central midfielder at this juncture. The Gunners boast a robust midfield, notably featuring world-class talent like Declan Rice, and possess other strong options within their squad.

It could be argued that Arsenal’s transfer strategy might be better focused on bolstering other areas of the team. Priorities for the North London club could potentially lie in securing a new striker, a new winger, or a versatile attacking player capable of fulfilling both roles, rather than adding another midfielder to an already strong department at the Emirates Stadium.
