Legendary coach Fabio Capello is confident that AC Milan can bridge the seven-point deficit separating them from Inter in the Serie A title contention. He drew a parallel to his coaching tenure at Real Madrid, stating, “At Real Madrid, I overcame a nine-point deficit against Barcelona.”
This gap, which stood at ten points until recently, narrowed after Milan secured a 1-0 victory over their city rivals. This win has reignited the title race, although a seven-point difference with ten matches remaining still presents a considerable challenge.
Capello Expresses Confidence in Milan’s Title Aspirations
Capello commented, “Inter still possess a significant lead, but I believe it has become primarily a psychological challenge for them now. In their recent matches, Inter have displayed inconsistent performances, shifting between periods of brilliant football and moments of frustrating sluggishness. This inconsistency is precisely what enables their adversaries to create difficulties.”
Regarding how to rectify this inconsistency and lack of intensity in Inter’s performances, Capello advised, “They need to play with greater humility and offer mutual support, an aspect I haven’t observed enough in Inter’s recent outings.”
AC Milan, currently performing strongly and well-positioned in the race for a top-four spot, essentially have ‘nothing to lose,’ a factor the former Rossoneri coach considers potentially crucial.
“Milan has a relatively favorable schedule ahead, so why shouldn’t they attempt to close the gap on the league leaders?” Capello questioned. “I achieved this with Real Madrid, overturning a nine-point deficit against Barcelona, primarily because Barcelona became complacent with their substantial advantage. Inter must be extremely cautious not to repeat this error. The risk now is that their players might lose their intense belief and focus.”
When asked what advice he would offer to Milan’s players if he were in the current coach’s position, Capello suggested, “I believe the coach should convey that they have largely met their primary objective for the season, and now is the moment to play with freedom and enjoyment.” He continued, “I observed Inter appearing rather subdued, lacking tenacity and resolve. I’m unsure of the reason, but Inter did not approach the derby with the appropriate mindset. I was particularly struck by how slowly the Nerazzurri circulated the ball. Perhaps the absence of Hakan Calhanoglu in midfield was a contributing factor.”
Despite being sidelined with an injury, Lautaro Martinez requested to be included on the substitutes’ bench to remain close to his teammates throughout the match. Capello remarked, “Lautaro embodies a true captain, one of those influential figures capable of galvanizing a team, demonstrating relentless work rate across the pitch, and contributing beyond merely scoring goals. That specific brand of tenacity is precisely what Inter currently lacks.”
