Carlos Sainz Sr, a highly accomplished two-time World Rally champion, is reportedly being considered as a significant contender to challenge the current FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for December 2025.
The 63-year-old, who is also the father of Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz, is understood to be receiving widespread support from executives across various motorsport categories that fall under the FIA`s governance.
In a recent interview with *Autosport*, Sainz confirmed that he is actively contemplating running for the top position within the federation.
Explaining his motivation, Sainz stated that after dedicating over 40 years to motorsport, a sport he feels has given him everything, the idea of becoming president has been on his mind for a while. He feels now might be the appropriate time in his career to take on this role. Sainz expressed confidence in his capability to perform well and build a strong team to contribute back to the sport. He believes his extensive experience accumulated over the years will enable him to introduce fresh and impactful ideas aimed at strengthening and developing both motorsport and the wider automotive world.

Regarding concerns about a potential conflict of interest due to his son`s participation in Formula 1, it is not anticipated to be a major issue among F1 teams. The expectation is that Sainz Sr. would responsibly delegate any matters directly impacting the competitive landscape. His widely acknowledged record of personal integrity is seen as alleviating such concerns, positioning him as a very credible candidate.
Sainz directly addressed this point, stating that his established track record is well-known, and people understand this would not pose a problem. He acknowledged the necessity of stepping back from his direct role in his son Carlos`s career but did not view this as a significant obstacle. He emphasized that Carlos is now an experienced F1 driver, and both understand their relationship dynamic would naturally evolve if he pursues this project. Sainz stressed the serious nature of the FIA as an organization and reaffirmed his belief that no conflict would arise.
While Sainz may possess support from influential figures within motorsport, successful election requires securing the backing of FIA members, many of whom are reported to still favor Ben Sulayem.
Ben Sulayem, who assumed the presidency at the end of 2021, has presided over a term marked by controversy, yet he is reportedly keen to extend his leadership. The governing body has experienced significant turnover in senior positions. A notable recent departure occurred last month when deputy president for sport Robert Reid resigned, reportedly citing concerns about the direction of governance within the FIA under Ben Sulayem`s leadership. The current president has also faced disagreements with drivers across various categories concerning his introduction of stricter fines and penalties for offenses like swearing and other forms of misconduct.
Recently, George Russell, director of the Grand Prix Drivers` Association, urged Ben Sulayem to follow through on his statement about `considering` further updates to the misconduct rules. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has also highlighted the need for drivers to have a stronger voice in the sport`s governance.
Carlos Sainz Sr. is reportedly eager to work collaboratively with drivers and intends to give the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers` Association) a more significant role in shaping the sport`s regulations.
The next FIA presidential election is scheduled to take place during the FIA general assembly in Uzbekistan on December 12.
