Nicolò Fagioli asserts he wasn’t taken aback by being left out of the Italy squad for the World Cup play-offs, though he expects his Fiorentina teammate Moise Kean to perform well, and recognizes Edin Dzeko as a challenging opponent.
The midfielder has made a strong impression this season in the Fiorentina (Viola) jersey, contributing two goals and three assists across 37 competitive matches.
Despite having earned seven senior caps for Italy, he hasn’t featured for the national team since October 2024, following his return from a suspension related to illegal gambling.
Fagioli Prepared to Await His Italy Opportunity
Although many anticipated his inclusion in Gennaro Gattuso’s squad for the World Cup play-offs, he ultimately wasn’t selected.
“Honestly, no, I believe all the players who were called up deserved their spot,” Fagioli told Sky Sport Italia.
“There was some debate surrounding these selections, but the reaction would have been similar had I or anyone else been chosen, as that’s typical in Italy.”
“Our focus should be on supporting the Azzurri against Bosnia, wishing them every success. I’m hopeful of doing enough to secure my place in the squad come June.”
Several of his club teammates are part of the Italy squad following their 2-0 triumph over Northern Ireland, a match where Kean scored after Sandro Tonali’s opening goal.
“Kean faced more challenges this season, largely because in Italian football, players are analyzed more thoroughly after a successful previous campaign,” Fagioli explained.
“He also dealt with some injuries and wasn’t at his peak physical condition, but he was instrumental in helping us navigate a tough period at Fiorentina. He’s an excellent player and is now demonstrating that for the national team as well.”
Fagioli is also well-acquainted with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s centre-forward, Edin Dzeko, who netted the equalizer against Wales last night, leading to extra time and ultimately a penalty shootout victory.
Bosnia and Herzegovina will now face Italy in the World Cup play-off final this Tuesday, March 31st.
