Flavio Briatore Dismisses Fixed Five-Race Plan for Franco Colapinto at Alpine

F1 news

Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore has clarified that there is no specific number of races planned for Franco Colapinto this year, despite an earlier announcement. Colapinto was initially stated to be replacing Jack Doohan for five Formula 1 races, beginning with the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and concluding after the Austrian Grand Prix. Alpine`s press release had mentioned this five-race period as a chance to evaluate options.

However, speaking to Sky Italy in Imola, Briatore indicated a shift in this plan. He stated that a driver isn`t limited to just three or five races, expressing that he had anticipated more from Jack Doohan and suggesting Doohan might need a break. Briatore emphasized that Colapinto will compete for as long as necessary, contradicting the idea of a fixed five-race limit.

His requirements for Colapinto are simple: be fast, avoid crashing, and score points. If Colapinto meets these expectations, Briatore suggested, he will continue driving indefinitely.

Briatore Comments on Oliver Oakes` Resignation

Briatore also commented on the unexpected resignation of team principal Oliver Oakes. Oakes announced his departure for personal reasons the day before the change involving Doohan and Colapinto was confirmed. Oakes stepped down shortly after his brother, William Oakes, faced charges related to `transferring criminal property` and `possession of a large amount of cash`. William Oakes is a director at Hitech Grand Prix, a junior team founded by Oliver Oakes.

Although Alpine stated Briatore would cover Oakes`s former duties, the FIA does not officially recognize him as the team principal; the racing director is currently listed as the team representative for administrative purposes. Briatore maintained that despite the organizational change, “nothing changes” fundamentally within the team. Regarding the team principal position, he said he needs to evaluate the situation and is currently taking charge, noting his experience in such roles.

He reiterated that Oakes`s resignation after the Miami race was unexpected for him and dismissed rumors of disagreements, stating they have a good relationship and that the team remains united.
