The Azzurri initially took the lead in Zenica through Moise Kean and appeared to be in control until Alessandro Bastoni received a red card, drastically altering the match dynamic. Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage, they conceded a late goal to Haris Tabakovic, following another impressive save by Gianluigi Donnarumma, and battled intensely through extra time. The game ultimately culminated in a penalty shootout, where Francesco Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante missed their attempts, while Bosnia successfully converted all of theirs.
Gattuso’s Emotional Reaction to Italy’s World Cup Elimination
An emotional Gattuso spoke to RAI Sport, stating, “These lads didn’t deserve this outcome, considering their immense effort, dedication, and love for the game. We created three clear opportunities, and most of their crosses posed little threat. I remain incredibly proud of them. If you were to stab me now, no blood would flow; it’s all been drained. This was crucial for the future of Italian football, and it’s profoundly disheartening to be eliminated this way.”
Controversy arose in extra time when Marco Palestra was fouled while clear on goal, yet referee Clement Turpin only issued a yellow card.
Gattuso responded, “I don’t wish to comment on the referee or anything else; this is simply football. I’ve been involved in this sport for many years, experiencing both triumphs and crushing defeats like today. But this one is exceptionally difficult to accept.”
He continued, “I was genuinely surprised by the sheer heart and determination they displayed. We were under siege, fighting in the trenches. Yet, here we are again, discussing our failure to qualify for the World Cup. I personally apologize for not achieving this goal, but these players truly gave everything they had.”
When questioned about his future as Italy coach, Gattuso replied, “I believe discussing my future today is irrelevant. The crucial objective was reaching the World Cup. We can take pride in our performance, but the pain is immense. We are deeply disappointed.”
