Gattuso Explains Squad Selections and Northern Ireland Dangers

Sport news

Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso recently addressed the media at Coverciano, shedding light on his squad selections for the upcoming World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland. He specifically explained the absence of attackers Nicolò Zaniolo, Federico Bernardeschi, and Riccardo Orsolini, while also highlighting the dangers posed by Northern Ireland.

Preparations are underway for Thursday’s pivotal match in Bergamo. Bologna’s Nicolò Cambiaghi has joined the squad, replacing Federico Chiesa.

Gattuso Explains Omission of Orsolini, Bernardeschi, and Zaniolo

During his press conference, Gattuso clarified his rationale behind not calling up Zaniolo, Bernardeschi, or Orsolini, despite acknowledging their capabilities. “From day one, I’ve focused on building strong relationships with the players,” Gattuso stated. “I know there will be questions about Zaniolo, Bernardeschi, and Orsolini – even though Riccardo was with us recently. However, my aim was to forge a cohesive group, and I am very content with the one we have created.”

Gattuso expressed his deep belief in the current squad’s potential to achieve their objective. “I hope with all my heart that we reach this target. I believe this group deserves joy for everything we’ve accomplished in recent months,” he added.

“I am aware that players like Zaniolo have performed exceptionally well, but these decisions were made in good faith. I didn’t want to spend time explaining how to maintain cohesion; instead, I have immense confidence in the players I’ve selected. Everyone here understands the stakes and the immense importance of this game. There’s no need to constantly remind them; we simply do what’s necessary to approach the match with calmness,” Gattuso continued.

Emphasizing the experience within his team, Gattuso remarked, “These are players who have won significant titles, participated in Champions League Finals, and lifted the Euros with the Azzurri. I have profound faith in our players. It requires great confidence because they are accustomed to playing in such crucial matches. We must possess the right mentality and serenity.”

Finally, Gattuso cautioned against complacency regarding their opponents. “We must enter this game with strong desire, clear heads, and an awareness of the potential dangers. We respect our opponents; they demonstrate incredible effort, possess great heart, and are particularly threatening from set pieces.”
