George McNeilly has been appointed as the new President of the Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA), marking a significant leadership transition for the esteemed organization.
GTWA functions as a premier professional association for golf travel writers, editors, broadcasters, and other media specialists dedicated to covering golf destinations and the broader industry. Its fundamental mission is to uphold rigorous journalistic standards, foster the sharing of industry knowledge, and deliver credible, engaging coverage of golf experiences worldwide.
McNeilly emphasized the invaluable role of independent media members, stating, “The credibility and authenticity of third-party working media members, who have no vested interest in the success or failure of a golf course, resort, or sporting event, cannot be matched by press releases or agency content.” He further stressed the importance for members to “respect the history and heritage of our organization.”
Established 21 years ago, GTWA was a passion project co-founded by Bruce Vittner and John Edwards, who envisioned creating a dedicated forum for traveling golf writers.
Addressing the rapidly evolving media landscape, McNeilly observed, “The landscape continues to change rapidly, as most credible storytellers in media centers or on assignment are not full-time employees.” He highlighted that businesses seeking broader exposure often “do not fully understand the decline in staff and budgets at news organizations and truly appreciate the broad reach and dedication of our members.”
Membership in GTWA provides substantial benefits to qualifying media professionals. These include access to a network of experienced peers, opportunities for collaboration and professional development, and increased visibility within a community focused on the craft of golf media. It also serves as a vital link between writers and industry partners, tourism groups, and destinations.
“GTWA is an ideal place to grow professionally, stay informed, and strengthen one’s presence in the golf media landscape,” McNeilly explained. He likened the organization to a “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for those who travel and write about golf, underscoring that “everything starts with a conversation.”
The recent transition period began with a comprehensive revision of the bylaws and the adoption of a streamlined mission statement: “To inform and engage golf fans and participants with integrity wherever the sport is played, watched, attended, written about, or visited.”
Although some members suggested a new name for the organization, the proposal was swiftly rejected by the majority.
McNeilly affirmed the continued relevance of the current name, stating, “We’ll always be doing something that involves writing. So the Golf Travel Writers of America is even more relevant, as we distribute on emerging platforms to more people than ever.”
Under the guidance of incoming Vice President Alan Darty, publisher of Golf One Media, a dedicated team has successfully redesigned the association’s website. This extensive revamp aims to better serve a diverse membership that now includes broadcasters, podcasters, and credible influencers who share the organization’s mission.
Darty described the updated website as “a one-stop hub for golf-related businesses to experience the quality work of our members and to connect with them.”
The GTWA executive committee is composed of President George McNeilly, Vice President Alan Darty, Secretary Dan Vukelich, Treasurer Joy Sarver, and the article’s author serving as president emeritus. Dan Vukelich and Len Ziehm were notably honored as the 2026 Vittner-Edwards Founders Award Winners, presented alongside Treasurer Joy Sarver and incoming President George McNeilly. The organization is headquartered in Orlando, FL, and further information, including membership details, can be found on their website.
McNeilly brings a wealth of experience to his new leadership role. For the past 14 years, he has taught Sports Business at Full Sail University while consistently contributing articles on professional golf, relevant destinations, and products.
Prior to his academic and writing career, McNeilly served as a senior executive at ESPN for over a decade. His illustrious career began as an award-winning multimedia broadcaster, producer, and writer, with experience spanning four Olympic Games across three continents, 17 Super Bowls, and numerous major golf events.
“We want to be welcoming yet discerning,” McNeilly stated, recognizing the growing number of multimedia contributors. “So many people are multimedia contributors now, and we must stay mindful of that. The word is continuing to spread. There are many opportunities for our members to add value to the audiences and stakeholders we serve.”
