Tennis star Holger Rune has announced he will be sidelined for an extended period after sustaining an Achilles injury that requires surgery. The world No. 11 shared the news following his withdrawal from the Nordic Open.
Rune was forced to retire from his semifinal match at the Nordic Open in Stockholm on Saturday. Competing against Ugo Humbert, the young Dane was leading 6-4, 2-2 when he visibly struggled with discomfort, eventually limping off the court.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Rune expressed his profound disappointment: “It`s going to be a while before I can step on court again. It`s tough. I had so much joy on court in Stockholm, and it`s unbearable to think that I will not feel this energy for some time now.”
The 22-year-old confirmed that his Achilles tendon suffered a “fully broken” injury on the proximal part, necessitating an operation scheduled for the upcoming week. This setback comes for a player who has already made a significant impact on the ATP Tour, reaching three Grand Slam quarterfinals and achieving a career-high ranking of No. 4. His absence will undoubtedly be felt on the professional circuit.
