Italiano Optimistic After Bologna’s 1-1 Draw with Roma in Europa League

Vincenzo Italiano expressed a positive outlook following Bologna’s 1-1 draw against Roma in the Europa League Round of 16 first leg at the Renato Dall’Ara. He emphasized that the tie remains wide open and commended his team’s spirit, which mirrored their strong performances earlier in the season.

Federico Bernardeschi was the standout player for the home side, netting a superb goal and consistently challenging the Roma defense. Italiano noted, “He delivered an excellent performance, evident from his very first powerful run down the right flank. He scored a beautiful goal and could have troubled them further, but Svilar made a miraculous save.”

Despite Lorenzo Pellegrini’s equalizer potentially dampening Bologna’s momentum, Italiano highlighted his squad’s continued composure and creativity. A shot from Vitik that struck the crossbar was their closest attempt at a second goal, leading Italiano to believe his team merited more from the evening. “We created more opportunities than them but lacked luck,” he stated, adding, “I was pleased with their attitude and effort, and I congratulated the players afterward.”

Regarding the tie’s prospects, Italiano was candid about the challenge at the Olimpico, yet refused to concede any advantage. “I’d estimate it at 51% for Roma and 49% for us, purely because of their home atmosphere,” he explained. “We had hoped for a more decisive outcome, and a win would have given us a slight edge, but a draw is acceptable. We will travel there and give our absolute best.”

Italiano also voiced criticism regarding the referee’s handling of Roma defender N’Dicka, alleging he repeatedly held and pulled Santiago Castro’s shirt without consequence. “If he had been booked, Castro might have found more solutions for us,” he remarked pointedly.
