Manager Gennaro Gattuso has revealed his 28-man squad for Italy’s upcoming World Cup play-off campaign at the end of March, notably featuring three players who have yet to earn their first senior international cap.

Gattuso has called up his chosen 28 for the vital World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland, scheduled for March 26 in Bergamo. The victor of that match will then travel to face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 31 in a winner-takes-all final to secure a spot in the main World Cup tournament.
Given the high stakes, Gattuso has understandably opted for a roster built around a core of trusted and seasoned players.
Key figures such as Alessandro Bastoni, Riccardo Calafiori, Federico Dimarco, Sandro Tonali, and Nicolo Barella are expected to be in the starting lineup against Northern Ireland. Additionally, Federico Chiesa makes a welcome return to the squad, marking his first call-up since EURO 2024.
Out of the 28 players selected, only three have not previously represented Italy at the senior level. Two of these are goalkeepers: Marco Carnesecchi and Elia Caprile, neither of whom have yet been given an opportunity over established keepers Gianluigi Donnarumma or Guglielmo Vicario.
Cagliari’s right-back Marco Palestra, currently on loan from Atalanta, is the sole uncapped outfield player included in Italy’s latest squad. The 21-year-old has made a significant impression during his breakthrough season in Serie A, demonstrating promising form.
