Jamie Vardy’s team, Cremonese, finds itself in a surprising Serie A relegation fight, a stark contrast to their promising start to the season. After securing promotion, Cremonese initially exceeded expectations, notably achieving a 2-1 victory against Serie A giants Milan at San Siro in an early fixture. This early success set an optimistic tone, particularly around the time Vardy joined the club last summer.
Only a few weeks ago, the club appeared to be in a comfortable position, and few would have predicted their current struggle for survival in the final months of the campaign. However, the Serie A relegation battle has intensified significantly, with teams such as Cagliari, Lecce, and Cremonese now demonstrating immense determination to avoid the drop.
Vardy, a celebrated figure from Leicester City, has contributed five goals and two assists in 25 Serie A appearances this season. Despite the initial positive momentum, the club’s director, Simone Giacchetta, had always maintained a realistic view, acknowledging the season would be challenging. Giacchetta underscored the club’s philosophy behind Vardy’s recruitment: “We’ve always looked for hungry players, eager to keep the standard high… He knows sacrifice and thrives in adversity. I believe we are alike in this. He is an excellent embodiment of the philosophy that if you genuinely believe, dreams do come true.”

In a critical move in mid-March, Cremonese made the difficult decision to dismiss head coach Davide Nicola. This followed a disappointing streak of 15 games without a win, during which they collected merely four points. Veteran Serie A coach Marco Giampaolo was subsequently appointed as his successor. Giampaolo’s influence has already yielded positive outcomes; the former Milan manager secured a vital away win against Parma in his inaugural match, significantly bolstering Cremonese’s hopes of staying in the top flight, although the road ahead remains arduous.
Currently, Cremonese and Lecce are level on 27 points. Cremonese is technically outside the relegation zone due to a superior goal difference. However, if both teams end the season with the same points tally, a tense play-off will decide which team descends to Serie B. While the fate of teams at the very bottom, such as Hellas Verona (with 18 points), appears largely sealed, a fierce struggle for survival is ongoing between Lecce, Cremonese, Fiorentina (29 points), and Cagliari (30 points). Teams like Torino, Genoa, and Parma are in a comparatively safer position, nearing the crucial 40-point threshold often associated with securing top-flight status.
