Khamzat Chimaev has been crowned the UFC middleweight champion, showcasing his complete superiority over Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319 last Saturday night.
The Chechen-born wrestling specialist secured a decisive unanimous decision victory, meticulously controlling Du Plessis throughout the bout with his exceptional grappling skills.
Chimaev immediately seized the initiative in the opening minute, executing a swift takedown. He pinned the South African fighter to the mat in a crucifix position, raining down punches with his left hand. Despite these strikes causing minimal damage, Du Plessis was forced to endure the relentless pressure.
The second round mirrored the first, with Chimaev once again bringing the fight to the canvas. He expertly latched onto his opponent`s back, threatening with knee strikes and choke attempts. Du Plessis found himself in similarly disadvantaged positions throughout the third and fourth rounds, visibly worn down by Chimaev`s control.
A brief glimmer of hope emerged for Du Plessis late in the final round as he managed to briefly improve his position, but it proved to be too little, too late. Ultimately, Khamzat Chimaev was declared the undisputed winner, with all three judges scoring the fight a commanding 50-44 in his favor.
“I never stick to a strict plan. I just go out and do what I train in the gym,” Chimaev stated, proudly sporting his newly acquired championship belt around his waist.
“He`s a strong guy, I couldn`t finish him, and I have a lot of respect for him. He was the only champion who called out my name,” Chimaev added regarding Du Plessis. “This guy has a real heart, he`s a true lion, a real African lion.”
Du Plessis graciously accepted his defeat but promised a swift return to reclaim his title.
“He 100 percent deserved this victory. He beat me fair and square tonight,” Du Plessis conceded.
“He was the better man tonight, but I will be back. I will come and get my belt back, but for now, it`s his, and he deserves it, and he should enjoy it.”
