Lazio’s first-choice goalkeeper, Ivan Provedel, has been discharged from the hospital following successful surgery on his shoulder. The medical team operating on him has issued a stark warning regarding the severity of the injury, likening it to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear typically suffered by a midfielder, indicating a lengthy and challenging recovery period.
Provedel sustained the injury during a recent training session. An MRI scan subsequently identified the issue as a lesion of the glenohumeral ligament, accompanied by damage to the glenoid labrum. Following the surgical procedure, his release from the hospital has been officially confirmed by a statement published on Lazio’s official website.
The Road to Recovery Begins for Provedel
The initial phase of Provedel’s rehabilitation will require him to wear a brace that stabilizes his movements for at least one month. After this period, he will be able to commence more intensive rehabilitation treatment.
This injury is anticipated to sideline the goalkeeper for an extended period, with reports suggesting he will be out of action for four to five months, effectively concluding his season prematurely.
Surgeon Giovanni Di Giacomo, who performed the operation, urged caution and patience regarding the recovery timeline. “We must not rush this; there are certain biological stages that need to progress naturally, so nature must be allowed to take its course,” Di Giacomo explained to Corriere dello Sport, as reported by Tuttomercatoweb, after the surgery. He further elaborated on the severity: “Provedel was highly motivated and eager to get back on the field. However, this is a serious injury. For a goalkeeper, a shoulder issue like this carries the same weight as a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the knee for a midfielder.”
In Provedel’s absence, Lazio has had to rely on their second-choice goalkeeper, Edoardo Motta. Motta, who joined the club from Reggina in January and turned 21 that same month, recently made his Serie A debut in Lazio’s 2-1 victory over Sassuolo.
