Lewis Hamilton Victorious in Chinese GP Sprint

F1 news

Lewis Hamilton achieved his first victory for Ferrari by winning the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint. After securing a surprising pole position, Hamilton successfully defended his lead against Max Verstappen at the beginning and throughout the initial laps. He then skillfully managed his tires to comfortably win the race.

This victory marks the first Sprint win for both Hamilton and Ferrari. It represents a remarkable comeback after a disappointing debut with the Italian team at the Australian Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri of McLaren overtook Verstappen for second place towards the end of the race. However, Piastri had pushed his tires too hard to catch Hamilton, who won by nearly seven seconds.

Later on Saturday, Piastri claimed his first grand prix pole position, while Hamilton qualified fifth for Sunday`s main race.

In the Sprint, Lando Norris, the winner in Melbourne and Drivers` Championship leader, earned only one point for finishing eighth. He dropped three positions from his starting position of sixth due to an error in the first lap.

George Russell from Mercedes finished fourth, holding off Hamilton`s Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, whom he had overtaken in the first lap.

Yuki Tsunoda drove impressively for Racing Bulls, securing sixth place and resisting pressure from Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Hamilton`s replacement at Mercedes.

Hamilton Responds to Critics with Decisive Victory

Despite the optimism following Hamilton`s Friday performance, doubts lingered about his ability to convert pole position into a win at the Shanghai International Circuit, especially after a lackluster performance in Australia. He faced not only Verstappen but also Piastri from third place, driving a McLaren car expected to be highly competitive this weekend.

The 40-year-old Hamilton demonstrated his sharp reflexes by getting a clean start and cutting off Verstappen to maintain the lead at the first corner.

Hamilton quickly extended his lead over Verstappen to just over a second, keeping him out of DRS range. However, this gap diminished on lap seven. Using his experience, Hamilton prevented Verstappen from overtaking, and the Red Bull driver then fell back as his tires struggled in the turbulent air behind the Ferrari.

As Hamilton pulled away, Verstappen faced pressure from Piastri, holding him off until lap 15. By this time, Hamilton was almost three seconds ahead.

It soon became evident that Piastri`s tires were degrading, and Hamilton extended his lead to secure a dominant victory.

Hamilton commented, `I feel many people underestimated the challenge of transitioning to a new team, adapting, understanding, and communicating effectively. I heard numerous critics who clearly lacked understanding, perhaps due to inexperience. It felt great to be more comfortable in the car here, unlike in Melbourne. From the first lap this weekend, we`ve been strong. The engineers and mechanics have done excellent work fine-tuning the car, and it felt fantastic.`

McLaren`s Performance and Norris`s Race

After Norris`s strong start to his championship campaign with a win in Australia, there was considerable discussion in Shanghai about McLaren`s potential dominance. Russell even suggested that the MCL38 could have a greater advantage than Red Bull`s dominant 2023 car.

However, a questionable strategy in Sprint qualifying and an error from Norris resulted in him starting sixth on the grid, with Piastri only managing to qualify third.

Norris`s race became more challenging when he went off track at Turn 6 on the first lap while attempting to overtake Russell, losing three positions.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was Norris`s struggle to pass Lance Stroll`s Aston Martin for most of the race, eventually overtaking him for eighth place with two laps remaining.

`I had a poor first lap,` Norris told Sky Sports F1. `After that, it was difficult to make progress. Qualifying wasn`t ideal, but I also didn`t perform well today.`

`In the race, I felt dreadful, so there`s a lot of work to be done.`

While Hamilton benefited from running in clean air, McLaren`s unexpected lack of pace was surprising and suggests a potentially exciting main race on Sunday.
