Former CONI President Giovanni Malagò has officially declared his intention to run for the FIGC Presidency, announcing his decision after receiving the endorsement from Lega Serie B. He stated, “I will file my candidacy tomorrow.”
Malagò to Vie for FIGC Presidency, Anticipates Strong Support
Malagò emerges as a prominent contender for the vacant FIGC President role, alongside Giancarlo Abete. The position became available following Gabriele Gravina’s resignation in late March, prompted by Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Although Malagò has held discussions with representatives from Lega Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, the LND (Amateur Leagues), the players’ association, and the coaches’ association, he formally confirmed his candidacy on Tuesday evening.
“I can confirm that tomorrow morning, I will file my candidacy for the presidency of the football federation,” Malagò told attendees at a charity dinner hosted by Lega Serie A, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Malagò’s announcement followed the crucial endorsement from Lega Serie B. With prior backing from Lega Serie A, the players’ association, and the coaches’ association, the addition of Lega Serie B’s support positions him to likely secure a majority of the electoral votes.
The distribution of votes for the upcoming FIGC Presidential election is as follows:
- Lega Serie A: 20 delegates, representing 18% of the votes.
- Lega Serie B: 20 delegates, representing 6% of the votes.
- Lega Pro (Serie C): 57 delegates, representing 12% of the votes.
- LND (Amateur Leagues): 99 delegates, representing 34% of the votes.
- Players’ association: 52 delegates, representing 20% of the votes.
- Coaches’ association: 26 delegates, representing 10% of the votes.
