Massimiliano Allegri couldn’t hide his intense emotions after Milan narrowly defeated Torino 3-2, a vital win that keeps the Rossoneri firmly engaged in the Serie A title chase against Inter. This victory was particularly crucial following recent defeats to Parma and Lazio, which had briefly jeopardized Milan’s championship aspirations during a key period of the season.
Allegri was so animated during the game that he was heard telling referee Doveri he would retire from football, a comment he later addressed with his characteristic wit in the post-match interview. “It was the heat of the moment,” he chuckled. “I’m getting older, and I wouldn’t want my heart to give out. That match was incredibly important for us at that point.”
The first half proved challenging, with Torino posing significant threats in the initial 30 minutes. Allegri acknowledged, “We were forcing play too much centrally and allowing too many counter-attacks.” He noted that in the second half, the players demonstrated improved physicality, which was not easy after conceding an equalizer just before halftime.
Regarding tactics, Allegri elaborated on Alexis Saelemaekers’ demanding role in his 4-3-3 formation. “He is our balance player; when we defend, he must act as the fifth defender, and when we attack, he must be the third forward. Sometimes he’s quite exhausted by the end of games.” The introduction of Christian Pulisic wide helped to break down Torino’s compact central defense.
Milan’s Victory: Allegri on Fullkrug’s Form and Pavlovic’s Progress
Niklas Fullkrug’s performance was also scrutinized, with Allegri defending the German striker while highlighting the common issue for players lacking consistent playing time. “It’s not easy when you don’t have continuity; the physical structure suffers,” he explained. “He had a difficult first half but a much better second. Compare that to Ricci, who, because of his physique and mentality, can come on at any point and immediately be in match mode. Players are different.” The head coach emphasized that Fullkrug’s second-half improvement was precisely the kind of response he expected.
Allegri was full of praise for Strahinja Pavlovic’s display, which included a spectacular long-range goal. “He played a great match tonight; he has improved a lot,” he stated. “He has character, soul, and he defended well in open play. He is growing significantly, and I am delighted.”
With the international break approaching, Allegri playfully teased his forwards. “This week, I ask nothing of anyone; the break is the only thing I asked them not to ruin for me. But the attackers will return to scoring in the decisive moments after the pause.”
Milan’s next fixture after the break is an away game against Napoli, a clash between the second and third-placed teams, which Allegri simply described as “a beautiful evening of football and sport.”
