Napoli has confirmed its intention to take “appropriate disciplinary action” against striker Romelu Lukaku after he failed to report for a scheduled training session on Tuesday. The club indicated that potential sanctions could include his exclusion from the first team.
Lukaku, who recently withdrew from the Belgium national team due to fitness issues, opted to remain in Belgium for individual training rather than returning to Naples as expected by the club.
In an official statement, Napoli announced: “Napoli confirms that Romelu Lukaku did not respond to today’s call-up ahead of the resumption of training. The club reserves the right to evaluate the adoption of appropriate disciplinary measures as well as the continuation of the player’s participation in the team on an indefinite basis.”
While earlier reports suggested that Napoli might exclude Lukaku from the team if he did not return, the club’s current statement hints at an even more severe response. Napoli’s legal team is reportedly reviewing the case, exploring various scenarios, which could potentially include the termination of the player’s contract, depending on the terms of the existing agreement.
Napoli is set to resume competitive play after the international break on Monday, April 6, when they will host second-placed Milan at the Stadio Maradona.
