Wimbledon has always been synonymous with elegance, not just in style but as a true philosophy. The tournament’s impeccable aesthetics, from its pristine green courts to the strict white dress code for players, make it a unique and timeless symbol in the world of tennis.
Beyond the famous ‘total white’ attire, language is now also coming under particularly close observation at Wimbledon. Chair umpires will be equipped with an updated list of swear words and expletives in various languages. This tool is designed to facilitate the precise identification of ‘audible obscenities’ uttered by players, addressing the practical challenge officials sometimes face in understanding outbursts in languages unfamiliar to them. Violations of this rule will result in substantial fines.
While this news has generated considerable discussion on social media—with mentions of players like Lorenzo Musetti, known for his colourful on-court expressions—it represents more of an update than an entirely new revolution. Similar lists were, in fact, already in use as early as 2014, as a chair umpire revealed. The list for the upcoming edition, however, will be significantly expanded and refined. Therefore, at Wimbledon, impeccable conduct extends beyond simply adhering to the white dress code; it now emphatically includes speaking appropriately as well.
