Norris-Piastri Singapore GP Collision: A Turning Point for McLaren, Says Martin Brundle

F1 news

Formula 1 commentator Martin Brundle suggests a fundamental shift in the relationship between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri following their collision at the start of the Singapore Grand Prix. This incident is seen as potentially changing the ground rules in the battle for the F1 title.

During the opening lap at the challenging Marina Bay Street Circuit, Norris, who began in fifth place, executed a strong start, managing to overtake Kimi Antonelli`s Mercedes. He then made an assertive move, attempting an overtake on his teammate Piastri, who had started from the third grid position. At Turn 3, Norris maneuvered to the inside of Piastri, but an initial contact with Max Verstappen`s Red Bull ahead caused Norris to suddenly veer right. This forced him into a heavy wheel-to-wheel collision with Piastri, an impact that nearly sent the Australian driver into the track barrier.

Piastri immediately voiced his profound frustration over the team radio, directly proposing that McLaren should intervene and reverse his and Norris`s positions. His anger became palpable when the team informed him that they would not be taking any action during the ongoing race. Expressing his clear displeasure, Piastri stated on the radio: “That`s not fair. I`m sorry, that`s not fair. If he has to avoid another car by crashing into his teammate, then that`s a pretty terrible way to avoid a collision.”
