Palladino: Atalanta, A Model for Italian Football with Faith in Youth

Sport news

Raffaele Palladino elaborated on Atalanta’s core philosophy, envisioning the club as a potential benchmark for Italian football, especially as they contend for a top-four position in Serie A ahead of their match against Lecce.

The fixture is set to take place at the Stadio Via del Mare. The competition for fourth place has intensified following recent results, including a goalless draw between Como and Udinese, and Roma’s significant 5-2 defeat to Inter. A victory in this game would place Atalanta within five points of Como, with seven league rounds remaining.

Palladino Trusts Atalanta’s Model for Success

“Our consistent objective over the past five months has been to relentlessly climb the standings,” Palladino stated in an interview with DAZN Italia. “We’ve secured numerous victories, demonstrated strong competitiveness in the Champions League, and remain active in the Coppa Italia. Now, we approach the final eight Serie A games. We must give our absolute best, strive for ambition, and leave no room for regret, truly reflecting the club’s ethos.”

Atalanta stands out as a significant example amidst the ongoing challenges in Italian football, particularly concerning the limited presence of Italian players in Serie A following the national team’s repeated failures to qualify for the World Cup. The club’s highly regarded youth academy consistently nurtures promising talent, providing a clear pathway for young players to integrate into the senior squad.

Palladino remarked, “Before my arrival, I already viewed Atalanta as a paradigm for Italian football because it is a club that deeply believes in youth, not exclusively Italian talent, though over half of our squad consists of Italian players. We recognize the importance of instilling confidence in these young players and allowing them the necessary time to grow, even when they make mistakes. While there’s often a tendency to discard players who err, we are committed to maintaining our belief in them.”

For today’s match, three Italian players are starting for Atalanta, alongside two in the Lecce lineup. This number would have been higher for Atalanta had Gianluca Scamacca not been sidelined due to injury.
