Former Italy coach Cesare Prandelli expresses optimism regarding the upcoming World Cup play-off semifinal against Northern Ireland. He attributes his positive outlook specifically to Gennaro Gattuso’s innovative approach but cautions against underestimating the opposition. “If you believe it will be easy,” Prandelli warns, “the task will only become harder.”

“My optimism stems from a straightforward fact: Gattuso has embarked on a fresh strategy that I am confident will yield significant success,” Prandelli, who famously led Italy to the Euro 2012 final, informed Gazzetta.
Prandelli elaborated on Gattuso’s unique method of engagement with the squad: “He fostered a direct relationship with the players. Despite not being given a dedicated training camp or even a couple of days with the full team, he proactively traveled across Italy and Europe to meet each player individually.”
“These meetings often occurred over meals, akin to gatherings among friends, where discussions weren’t exclusively about football. This approach comes naturally to him because he is a genuinely pleasant individual who values these subtle interactions,” Prandelli added.
Prandelli noted the immediate positive impact of Gattuso’s method, stating: “The players now feel integrated into a family, a cohesive unit where certain aspects are prioritized over mere tactics.”
He further explained, “While individual incidents, such as an early conceded goal or a shot hitting the post, can undermine specific tactical plans, the strength of the group endures.”
“Historically, Italy’s victories have always been forged through strong team spirit. The Azzurri had previously felt isolated, a sentiment prevalent around them. Unable to formally train with the players until Monday, Rino (Gattuso) wisely chose an alternative approach to connect with his squad.”
Although Italy enters tonight’s match as strong favorites, Prandelli emphasizes that this should not lead to underestimation of their opponent.
