According to Spanish media, Antonio Rudiger is poised to agree to a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid. This development effectively ends Juventus’s aspirations of acquiring the German centre-back on a free transfer this summer.
Reports indicate that Rudiger has accepted the club’s offer, even though he initially sought a two-year deal. Ultimately, he has come to terms with Real Madrid’s policy of offering annual renewals to players of his age.
Rudiger has been a consistent performer under Carlo Ancelotti, playing through injuries to maintain his crucial role at the Bernabéu. He has also reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia to remain in the Spanish capital.
This news comes as a setback for Juventus, who are said to have been in discussions with the defender since March. Coach Luciano Spalletti, a long-time admirer of Rudiger from their time together at Roma, had reportedly been advocating for a three-year deal worth €5-6 million per season.
English clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United had also expressed interest. However, Manchester United’s pursuit was reportedly waning due to ongoing talks to extend Harry Maguire’s contract.
Rudiger is now expected to be a central figure in the defense under incoming manager José Mourinho, alongside Dean Huijsen and Éder Militão. The departure of David Alaba has been confirmed, while Raul Asensio’s future at the club remains uncertain.
