Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri has publicly criticized President Claudio Lotito, expressing his frustration over the club’s transfer strategy. His comments come after first-choice goalkeeper Ivan Provedel was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury, forcing 21-year-old Edoardo Motta to make his Serie A debut.
Sarri specifically voiced strong opposition to the January decision to loan out goalkeeper Christos Mandas, stating, “I was totally against the sale of Christos Mandas.” This transfer move significantly reduced Lazio’s goalkeeping options, leaving them vulnerable following Provedel’s tendon tear that required surgery.
The coach also highlighted the team’s inconsistent performance, noting a significant discrepancy in attitude and statistics between their recent Serie A matches and a more spirited Coppa Italia semi-final draw. “We have such incredible differences in our statistics from Sunday to Wednesday, they are genuinely hard to explain,” Sarri observed, emphasizing the crucial need for consistent motivation from his squad in every game.
Looking ahead, Sarri acknowledged the quality of their upcoming opponent, Sassuolo, describing them as “a strong team, well-organised and had a clear identity from the start.”
