Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni expressed his deep sadness regarding Italy’s elimination from the World Cup play-offs, describing it as a “hard truth to accept” and an “unfair” outcome.
Scaloni’s remarks followed Argentina’s 5-0 friendly victory over Zambia. The former Lazio defender shared his thoughts on the Azzurri’s recent struggle, noting Italy’s failure to qualify for the tournament.
“I have Italian relatives, and what is happening in Italy saddens me,” Scaloni stated during a post-match press conference. “It’s a brother country to Argentina, one that cares deeply for us. Italy is a global football power, so its absence from the World Cup does not sit well with us Argentines. It’s tragic how it unfolded, feeling unfair; it truly is a difficult reality to confront.”
In Italy, the aftermath of the qualification failure has led to significant pressure on FIGC President Gabriele Gravina. The Minister for Sport has publicly urged for substantial reforms within the Italian FA, implicitly suggesting Gravina’s resignation.
