Shevchenko: Rafael Leao is Not a Striker, Must Maintain Right Attitude for Milan

Sport news

Andriy Shevchenko expresses his belief that AC Milan still has a fighting chance in the Scudetto race, emphasizing that “anything can happen.” However, he issued a clear warning regarding Rafael Leao, asserting that the player “is not a striker” and must avoid displaying a “wrong attitude.”

Following their narrow 3-2 victory over Torino this past weekend, the Rossoneri have intensified the pressure on league leaders Inter, reducing the gap at the summit of the Serie A table to a mere six points. With only eight matches remaining, and Napoli trailing by just seven points, the Scudetto battle has unexpectedly reignited.

Shevchenko’s View on Milan’s Title Hopes and Leao

“Inter possesses a significantly deeper squad and holds a points advantage, but Milan is undeniably enjoying a strong season,” observed club legend Shevchenko, speaking to reporters while attending the Legends Trophy tour event.

He continued, “The victory against Torino represented a crucial stride forward, especially after Allegri successfully re-energized the team following their loss to Lazio. I believe Milan will secure wins in their upcoming fixtures, maintaining pressure on Inter. If they remain contenders, then truly anything is possible. The fate of the title will be sealed in the coming weeks.”

Milan’s recent defeat to Lazio was overshadowed by controversy surrounding Rafael Leao. The player reportedly reacted angrily to being substituted, resisted a hug from coach Max Allegri, and was even said to have argued with teammate Christian Pulisic.

The talented Portuguese forward has visibly struggled to adapt to the new central striker role assigned to him by Allegri, openly preferring his usual position on the left wing.

“Rafa is simply not a natural striker,” cautioned Shevchenko, a legendary figure renowned for his prolific goal-scoring exploits in the Rossoneri colors. “He has been deployed as a center-forward, performing adequately in some matches but struggling in others. It’s imperative to assess his genuine desire to contribute to the team, especially since he’s currently the sole player capable of fulfilling that specific role.”

While Leao’s immense talent is undeniable, his attitude has frequently created issues, leading to reports that Milan’s patience is wearing thin. “It’s acceptable to have an off day in a game, but it’s unacceptable to display the wrong attitude,” Shevchenko emphasized. “Moments of frustration with a teammate or coach can occur, but the crucial aspect is to resolve such disagreements immediately.”

Leao was sidelined due to injury during the 3-2 win over Torino, meaning his most recent appearance left the lasting impression of his defiant reaction to substitution against Lazio.
