The genesis of this project stems from a personal commitment: Li began his work after promising his now 89-year-old mentor that he would help him improve his walking ability. Drawing on advancements in semiconductor technology, Li created an insole embedded with miniature sensors. These sensors are capable of gathering real-time data on the wearer’s gait and foot pressure patterns. This valuable “hi-tech” information is then transmitted to a connected device, such as a tablet or a smartphone. The device analyzes the data to provide actionable insights and precise recommendations aimed at correcting gait irregularities and thus preventing potential falls.

How the Smart Insole Functions

It’s important to clarify that Li’s solution is not a new type of shoe, but rather an intelligent insole designed to be inserted into existing footwear. Its primary objective is to offer crucial diagnostic information to enhance patient health and safety. By closely monitoring an elderly person’s walking dynamics and movement patterns, the system empowers them to maintain greater independence and move with increased security, particularly within their own homes.

The insole effectively identifies areas of higher pressure on the foot and assesses overall balance, helping to determine if the wearer’s walking is stable or if there’s an elevated risk of falling. The data gathered facilitates targeted interventions, which might include suggesting more appropriate footwear or recommending specific exercises to modify and improve walking patterns.
