Spanish GP Qualifying: McLaren Locks Out Front Row

F1 news

Oscar Piastri secured pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, leading a McLaren front-row lockout alongside his teammate Lando Norris in Barcelona.

Piastri, who holds a three-point advantage over Norris in the world championship standings, was initially slower after the first attempts in the final qualifying session (Q3). However, he delivered a superb final lap, clocking in at 1:11.546 to claim his fourth pole of the season.

Lando Norris, fresh from his win and pole in Monaco, couldn`t quite replicate that form. A less tidy final effort left him two tenths of a second adrift of Piastri.

Max Verstappen and George Russell recorded identical lap times, finishing third and fourth respectively, less than a tenth behind Norris. Verstappen secured the third spot by setting his time earlier than Russell.

Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth for Ferrari, managing to outpace his teammate Charles Leclerc, who finished seventh behind Mercedes` Kimi Antonelli. This was only the second time Hamilton has qualified ahead of Leclerc in nine sessions this season.

McLaren`s dominant performance dispelled recent speculation that a technical directive regarding front wings might impede the Constructors` Championship leaders. Instead, the team had perhaps their strongest start to a race weekend this year, fueling expectations of an intense title battle between their drivers.

Pierre Gasly put in an impressive performance for Alpine, qualifying eighth. Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar continued his strong run by taking ninth, ahead of Aston Martin`s Fernando Alonso.

Red Bull`s difficulties with their second car persisted, as Yuki Tsunoda qualified last, failing to advance to Q3 for the third race in a row.

Piastri Takes Advantage in Tight Title Fight

Following McLaren`s strong showing in practice, Saturday`s qualifying built up to a thrilling Q3 battle between Piastri and Norris.

After being outperformed by Piastri in final practice, Norris recovered his pace by the time Q3 began. Norris briefly benefited from a slipstream from Piastri at the start of his first Q3 lap, as Piastri moved aside after completing his own run.

Norris posted a significantly stronger first sector, putting him just 0.017s ahead of Piastri after the initial runs, while the rest of the field competed for third place.

Norris was the first to complete his final run but struggled with precision throughout the lap. Piastri, following behind, executed a perfect lap to win pole by the largest margin between first and second this season.

Norris commented, “Oscar drove very well. The pace is definitely there, just a couple of little mistakes.”

Piastri has exceeded pre-season expectations that Norris would be McLaren`s primary championship contender, showing remarkable improvement from last season. Out-qualifying Norris on Saturday gives Piastri a 5-4 advantage in Grand Prix qualifying sessions this season, already surpassing the four times he qualified ahead of Norris in the entire 2024 campaign.

Piastri, who struggled at Barcelona last year, expressed his satisfaction: “Very happy. It`s been a good weekend so far. It didn`t start off in the best way, we were struggling a little bit, but last night we found some pace and today the car is mega and feel I have been able to put in some good laps as well.”

“This was a pretty miserable scene 12 months ago so to turn it around in the best way is a great result,” he added.

The forecast for continued extreme heat on Sunday will present a challenge for tire management, but Piastri has regained momentum after Norris`s Monaco victory.

Hamilton `Happy` Behind Verstappen, Russell

As has been common this season, Verstappen and Russell were the closest challengers to the McLarens, but even they couldn`t prevent the papaya cars from locking out the front row.

Verstappen, who trails Piastri by 25 points, remains the biggest threat in the Drivers` Championship. He demonstrated in Imola that he is ready to capitalize on any opportunity from the start.

“We were lacking all weekend compared to them [McLaren]. We executed well,” Verstappen stated. “Third is where we more or less should be. It`s fun. Around here it`s about squeezing everything out of the car.”

“I will try my best [in the race] but they will be tough to beat,” he concluded.

Mercedes have generally seen a drop in race performance compared to qualifying pace, which could make Russell vulnerable to Hamilton`s Ferrari behind him.

Russell told Sky Sports F1: “We know we have a fast car on Saturday. We are doing best to have a fast car on Sunday… From what we have seen so far, it will be a tricky race, similar to Bahrain with a lot of overheating and a two-stop strategy. We saw how dominant McLaren were there.”

Hamilton has had an underwhelming start to his first season with Ferrari since his move from Mercedes. However, his fifth-place grid slot matches his highest starting position of the season.

The seven-time world champion had been frustrated on Friday, describing the SF-25 as “not driveable,” but was much more positive after qualifying, especially having beaten his teammate for only the second time in 15 races stretching back to last season.

Hamilton told Sky Sports F1: “We fixed it for today and the car was much more drivable, much more enjoyable… We clearly made an improvement in qualifying to get into Q3 and be in the top five. I`m really happy with that.”
