Stephan El Shaarawy has confirmed his departure from AS Roma as his contract comes to an end on June 30th. This marks the conclusion of a ten-year period with the Giallorossi, during which he became a highly cherished figure in the club’s recent history.
The winger made his official announcement with just two matches left in the season: a derby against Lazio and a final away game against Verona. He will be departing the Italian capital as a free agent.
El Shaarawy Concludes Decade at Roma with 65 Goals and Conference League Title
El Shaarawy initially joined Roma in January 2016 after a stint at Monaco. Prior to that, he had already established himself as one of Serie A’s most exciting young wingers at AC Milan.
He moved to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in the summer of 2019 but returned to Roma in January 2021, remaining a consistent member of the squad ever since.
Throughout his two spells in Rome, the Italian international of Egyptian heritage played 346 games for the club, scoring 65 goals and providing 50 assists. The pinnacle of his time at the Stadio Olimpico was the 2021/22 season, when Roma, under José Mourinho, won the UEFA Conference League – the club’s first European trophy in 61 years.
His exit had been anticipated for some time. Reports indicated that coach Gian Piero Gasperini had been advocating for contract extensions for El Shaarawy and three other players whose contracts were expiring earlier this month. The winger’s announcement suggests these efforts did not lead to an agreement.
