Supercomputer names surprise favourite for 4th Champions League spot in Serie A

Sport news

Opta’s supercomputer has surprisingly identified Como as the frontrunner for the fourth Champions League spot in Serie A this season. Currently positioned fourth in the league with eight matches remaining, Como holds a 60.87% probability of securing a top-four finish, significantly ahead of traditional powerhouses Juventus (24.48%) and Roma (17.15%). This projection, derived from Opta’s advanced algorithm, highlights the remarkable ascent of Cesc Fabregas’s side.

Both Juventus and Roma are three points behind Como in the Serie A standings. While Juventus, despite showing improvements under Luciano Spalletti, continues to struggle with consistency—evidenced by a recent 1-1 home draw against Sassuolo—Roma is reportedly experiencing internal tensions. Uncertainty surrounds Gian Piero Gasperini’s future due to disagreements with club director Frederic Massara.

In stark contrast, Fabregas’ Como has been in formidable form, securing victories in each of their last five league outings. Their remaining schedule appears manageable, with home and away fixtures against Inter and Napoli respectively posing the toughest challenges in the final stretch of the campaign.

Opta’s analysis also extends to the Serie A title race, where Inter is overwhelmingly favored to win the Scudetto with an 89.48% chance. Milan follows with a 6.16% probability, and Napoli with 4.19%. Despite a recent dip in form, securing only two points in their last three league games, Inter maintains a comfortable six-point lead over second-placed Milan and a seven-point advantage over Napoli, who are scheduled to clash after the March international break.
