Ted Lasso Season 4: News on Cast, Release Date, and More

Football news

It`s now official: Ted Lasso will be making a return for a fourth season on Apple TV+.

Apple recently confirmed that production has begun on the next installment of the highly acclaimed original series. Jason Sudeikis, the creator and star who brought the beloved American football coach turned soccer manager to life, is expected to reprise his Emmy-winning role.

The series has won over both audiences and reviewers, with Jason Sudeikis leading the Apple TV+ hit as the optimistic and sincere Coach Lasso, tasked with guiding the fictional English football club AFC Richmond towards success.

Beyond its heartwarming humor, the show has also been praised for its sensitive portrayal of mental health issues. Ted Lasso quickly became an awards darling, sweeping the 2021 Emmy Awards where Sudeikis won Best Actor, Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein earned Best Supporting Actress and Actor respectively, and the series itself was named Best Comedy.

After a remarkable three-season run, Ted Lasso has firmly established itself as a cultural phenomenon, receiving widespread acclaim and accumulating 13 Emmy Awards. The third season concluded in a manner that many viewers saw as a definitive ending, with Coach Lasso returning to the United States after his three-year tenure managing AFC Richmond.

While the third season felt like a natural stopping point for Ted`s personal journey, new information indicates that the story is far from over. As one of Apple TV+`s most celebrated and popular shows, it`s understandable that fans are eager for more of its signature blend of humor, emotion, and hopeful storytelling.

Despite the seemingly conclusive third season, Apple TV+ has indeed confirmed that the narrative will continue, with season four now officially in development.

When can fans expect Ted Lasso`s return, and which familiar faces will be back for the next chapter?

Ted Lasso Season 4 Cast

Jason Sudeikis is officially slated to return for the fourth season, which is no surprise given his central role. However, the involvement of the rest of the ensemble cast remains less certain. Although reports from last August suggested Apple had secured contract options for Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins), their participation has not yet been formally announced. With limited details about the plot for the upcoming season, it will be interesting to see how their characters might fit into the new narrative.

While casting details are still emerging, the show`s core creative team largely remains in place. Sudeikis will continue as an executive producer alongside Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard), Joe Kelly, Jane Becker, Jamie Lee, and Bill Wrubel. Additionally, writer and producer Jack Burditt—known for his work on shows like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt—joins as an executive producer. Co-creator Bill Lawrence is also returning, although his primary focus has recently been on his other series, Shrinking.

Juno Temple, who played Keeley in the first three seasons, is currently in negotiations to return, suggesting another familiar face might be back. Adding to the excitement through his social media activity, Nick Mohammed has fueled speculation regarding Ted Lasso`s return by hinting at potential storylines.

He mentioned on the Chris Moyles Show on Radio X: “I know what has come out in the press. But I think it`s fine to say that I did know that before, so I know that it`s about Ted coming back and coaching the women`s football team.”

When asked if Lasso would be returning to familiar surroundings but in a slightly different capacity, he added: “At Richmond. That`s definitely come out.”

Meanwhile, casting is underway for a young actor to portray Ted Lasso`s son, Henry. Henry has been a devoted soccer fan throughout the series and, at 12 years old, has developed into a promising player himself. Kola Bokinni has also expressed enthusiasm for a potential return, with the AFC Richmond captain reportedly saying, “Whatever happens, I`ll be there.”

Regarding other familiar faces, it`s currently unclear who else might be invited back for the fourth season. Nevertheless, many cast members have often expressed their willingness to return if the opportunity arises, and guest appearances are likely, although no official announcements have been made.

Unfortunately, one fan-favorite character will not be appearing in Season 4. Matthew Belloni of Puck News reported that Phil Dunster, known for his portrayal of AFC Richmond`s Jamie Tartt, will not be returning to the series due to scheduling conflicts. His absence is likely due to his active involvement in two other shows, The Devil`s Hour on Prime Video and Surface on Apple TV+.

Here are the main cast members and characters from Ted Lasso season 3. Note that presence in this list does not confirm their return for season 4.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Release Date and Trailer

Since Ted Lasso Season 4 was only recently announced, there is currently no confirmed release date or trailer available. We will update this section as soon as any information is released.

If production proceeds as expected, filming is estimated to take approximately a year to complete. Therefore, it is unlikely the new season will arrive before the end of the current year.

Potential Storylines for Ted Lasso Season 4

For the essence and charm of Ted Lasso to endure, it`s clear that Ted Lasso himself needs to remain involved. A major challenge for a potential fourth season would be devising a plausible reason for Jason Sudeikis`s beloved AFC Richmond manager to return to England, pulling him away from his family in the U.S. to rejoin the club on its path forward.

There is always the possibility that the Apple TV+ sports comedy could continue without Ted in a central coaching role, perhaps with Sudeikis taking on more of a behind-the-scenes capacity. However, considering the optimistic Kansan is widely seen as the heart and soul of the series, it`s difficult to imagine the show proceeding without him making at least some form of appearance.

As Season 3 concluded, AFC Richmond appeared ready to launch a women`s team following Keeley Jones` successful pitch to Rebecca Welton. This development could potentially create an opportunity for Ted to take charge of the women`s squad, providing fresh comedic situations as he navigates the distinct challenges of coaching a different type of team. Indeed, Sudeikis effectively confirmed this direction for Season 4, sharing the news on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce.

Meanwhile, the AFC Richmond men`s team remains under the capable guidance of Roy Kent, who has stepped into the managerial position alongside Coach Beard and Nathan “Nate” Shelly. With the club having narrowly missed securing the Premier League title last season, the pursuit of that elusive championship could very well be a key focus in a potential fourth chapter.
