The former Empoli and Cagliari stopper was excluded from the Azzurri squad for the upcoming World Cup play-offs, necessitated by a hernia surgery. According to SportMediaset, the operation took place on Monday.
From his hospital bed, the 29-year-old posted a selfie on social media, directly addressing the Azzurri with the hopeful message: “See you soon, Azzurri.”

With Vicario sidelined for several weeks, Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso has called upon Elia Caprile, Alex Meret, Marco Carnesecchi, and captain Gigio Donnarumma to fill the goalkeeping positions for the crucial World Cup play-off matches.
The Azzurri are set to host Northern Ireland in Bergamo for their semi-final clash on Thursday, March 26. Should they advance, they will travel to face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Final on Tuesday, March 31.
