Tottenham Hotspur, under the guidance of former Juventus head coach Igor Tudor, executed a dramatic U-turn on their initial team selection for Tuesday night’s Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, originally benched, was thrust back into action just 16 minutes into the match after his side conceded three early goals.
Vicario, Italy’s international stopper, was conspicuously absent from Tottenham’s starting XI for the Champions League Round of 16 first-leg tie against Atletico. Coach Tudor had instead opted to give Antonin Kinsky his debut in a European competition. This decision had been met with approval by many Spurs fans, who had voiced concerns over Vicario’s inconsistent form throughout the current season.
However, the tactical gamble quickly unravelled as Tottenham found themselves trailing by three goals within a mere fifteen minutes in Madrid. In a highly unusual move, Tudor then decided to substitute Kinsky and reintroduce Vicario into the game after just 16 minutes.
Kinsky’s brief stint was marred by errors; a crucial slip contributed directly to Atletico’s opening goal, and a subsequent mistake led to Julian Alvarez’s strike, extending Atletico’s lead to 3-0.
The relentless pressure from Atletico continued even after Vicario’s introduction, with Robin Le Normand heading in a fourth goal from a corner. Pedro Porro managed to claw one back for Tottenham shortly after, concluding a chaotic and goal-laden opening 25 minutes in the Spanish capital.
