Bayern Munich delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Atalanta 6-1 in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie in Bergamo. Goals from Josip Stanisic, Michael Olise (2), Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson, and Jamal Musiala showcased an overwhelming display from the German giants, with Mario Pasalic scoring a late consolation for Atalanta.
Atalanta had scraped through the play-off rounds against Bundesliga opposition Borussia Dortmund to reach this stage, while Bayern automatically qualified by finishing second in the league phase.
Coach Raffaele Palladino made some surprising tactical choices for Atalanta, switching to a back four and starting both Gianluca Scamacca and Nikola Krstovic up front. Key players like Ederson, Charles De Ketelaere, and Giacomo Raspadori were sidelined due to injury, and Giorgio Scalvini was suspended. Bayern, despite resting Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala from the starting XI, still fielded a potent attack featuring Olise, Gnabry, Luis Diaz, and Jackson.
The match in Bergamo began intensely, with Atalanta initially pressing their opponents. However, it was Bayern who registered the first shot on target through Olise and quickly established their dominance. Bayern completed their six-goal haul shortly after. Jackson, operating on the right flank, skillfully beat his defender before delivering a cross into the six-yard box for Musiala to easily tap home.
The visitors could have added even more, with Upamecano hitting the post with a header before the final whistle.
Mario Pasalic offered a small moment of joy for the home crowd in injury time with a consolation goal. Raoul Bellanova’s strong run down the right produced a good cross into the box. A collision between Krstovic and Urbig left the ball perfectly for the Croatian to prod into the net.
Atalanta now faces a daunting trip to Bavaria for the second leg next weekend. After this crushing defeat, the return fixture appears to be a mere formality for La Dea.
