Udinese and Watford Owner Praises Como’s ‘Miraculous’ Season, Backs Lucca to Rebound

Sport news

Giampaolo Pozzo, the owner of both Udinese and Watford football clubs, has lauded Como’s extraordinary performance this season as “miraculous.” He also conveyed his strong belief in striker Lorenzo Lucca’s potential career revival, stating, “It’s impossible for a player of his youth to completely reverse his performance levels from one year to the next.”

In a recent interview, Pozzo offered his insights into the future strategies for both Udinese and Watford.

Pozzo adamantly reaffirmed that Udinese is not for sale, despite the club’s active pursuit of a financial partner to bolster its on-field results.

Pozzo: Udinese Not for Sale, Seeking Partnership

“My primary aim is to clarify that we are not looking to sell the club,” Pozzo stated. “Instead, our ambition is to elevate Udinese to a more European standing, much like Atalanta has achieved, with the goal of improving our sporting outcomes. Operating on a regional budget, our current objective is comfortable survival in the league. We consistently strive to reinforce the squad, and we are open to collaborating with anyone interested in a potential project with Udinese, under any conditions. While specific figures are difficult to discuss, there was a rumored negotiation, potentially even signed, concerning a €300 million sale. However, our preference is not to sell but rather to establish a partnership with investment funds to boost our sporting performance.”

Udinese currently holds the 11th position in Serie A, having accumulated 39 points from 30 matches, effectively securing their safety with eight games remaining in the season.

A key striker for the team, acquired in 2023, has been instrumental, netting 10 goals and providing three assists across 26 appearances in all competitions.

Pozzo praised the player, stating, “We acquired him for €3 million; he’s an excellent player with a fantastic attitude towards the club. Despite facing some challenging periods, he consistently demonstrates his ability to control the ball and find the back of the net when given the opportunity.”

While Udinese historically contended for European qualification in Serie A, this season has seen Como emerge as a surprising contender for a Champions League berth, currently occupying fourth place in the league standings.

“Honestly, their achievements are miraculous,” Pozzo commented. “It takes more than just money; capability is also essential. They are accomplishing extraordinary feats, showcasing strong management and making astute decisions, particularly in recruiting the right players. Although I don’t know them personally, they have clearly invested their resources wisely.”

Following his tenure at Udinese, Lorenzo Lucca has faced challenges, struggling to make an impact with his subsequent clubs. After a less-than-impressive first half of the season, his loan move in January has yet to yield significant improvement in his performance.

Pozzo remarked, “He performed commendably during his time with us, but patience is crucial as immediate success isn’t always guaranteed. It defies logic for a player of his age to entirely lose his performance capabilities from one year to the next. I am confident he will rediscover the form we’ve come to expect, showcasing his strong character and goal-scoring prowess.”

The Italian entrepreneur then shifted his focus to Watford, his English Championship club, discussing their primary objective for the current season.

“It’s a demanding league,” Pozzo acknowledged. “Our strategy involves identifying and nurturing young talent, which requires a patient approach. Our ultimate goal is promotion to the Premier League; we will see if we can achieve it.”
