Italy international goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma faced a crucial split-second decision during Manchester City’s Champions League match against Real Madrid, appearing to prefer conceding the goal rather than attempting a full save.
Donnarumma, who started in the Champions League Round of 16 tie at the Santiago Bernabeu, was caught out by Federico Valverde’s opening strike.
The goal unfolded from a direct play: Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball forward, which Valverde controlled brilliantly before breaking clear towards the goal.
Donnarumma’s Action Explained
As Donnarumma rushed out to narrow the angle for Valverde, he seemed to retract his arm at the very last moment. This allowed Valverde to navigate around him and skillfully guide the ball into the net from a challenging position.
Former goalkeeper Joe Hart, providing analysis on TNT Sport, confirmed the widespread suspicion: Donnarumma likely believed he wouldn’t reach the ball in time and feared he might be sliding out of the penalty area. This calculation, combined with the risk of conceding a penalty (or even a red card) and the already tight angle Valverde was facing, prompted the Italian keeper to pull his arm back and allow Valverde to score.
Adding another layer of intrigue, this marked Thibaut Courtois’ second assist for Real Madrid in the Champions League this season, an unusual yet effective contribution from a goalkeeper.
