Why Gasperini faces an uncertain Roma future but is holding off on decision

Sport news

Gian Piero Gasperini’s long-term position as Roma’s head coach remains uncertain. The former Atalanta tactician reportedly intends to defer any significant career choices until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.

Why is there tension among the Roma senior management?

Recent developments suggest increasing friction within Roma’s senior management, particularly following the club’s elimination from the Europa League’s round of 16 by Bologna, a team positioned significantly lower in the Serie A standings.

Reports indicate a recent confrontation involving co-owner Ryan Friedkin, director Frederic Massara, and advisor Claudio Ranieri after the Europa League exit. Some speculate that Massara, Ranieri, or Gasperini himself might depart the club at season’s end.

Conflicting perspectives exist among Roma’s senior leadership regarding the 2025-26 season’s performance. Gasperini reportedly believes he has performed commendably given the available resources and numerous key player injuries, including Paulo Dybala, Matias Soule, Artem Dovbyk, Evan Ferguson, and Manu Kone.

Furthermore, Gasperini is understood to be dissatisfied with the club’s transfer activity, stating he did not secure his desired signings in either the summer or January windows, which he feels compounded the team’s challenges.

Conversely, the club leadership maintains that they have provided adequate support to enable the coach to secure a top-four Serie A finish and Champions League qualification for the next season, even amidst financial fair play constraints.

For instance, the January acquisition of Robinio Vaz from Marseille for €20m is seen by the club as a promising investment. However, Gasperini had reportedly sought a more established and experienced centre-forward to mitigate the impact of Dovbyk and Ferguson’s absences.

Where Roma and Gasperini currently stand

Roma squad members not on international duty are expected to resume training on Tuesday, potentially leading to a discussion between Gasperini, Ranieri, and Massara.

The prevailing sentiment is that all stakeholders must collaborate intensely until the close of the 2025-26 season as Roma strives for a top-four finish in Serie A.

Currently, the Giallorossi have accumulated 54 points from 30 matches, marking their second-best performance at this stage in eight years, surpassed only by Jose Mourinho’s second season (56 points).

Despite this strong points tally, Roma sits in sixth place, level on points with fifth-placed Juventus and three points adrift of fourth-placed Como.

Regarding Gasperini’s future, a comprehensive evaluation is anticipated at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, with all options remaining open.
