Baldini: Italy Has Untapped Potential, Even With New Talent

Sport news

Interim Italy coach Silvio Baldini shared his concerns about fielding 15 players making their senior international debuts during the recent victory against Luxembourg. He believes the team is capable of significantly better performances.

The match was a landmark occasion for many, with eight players earning their first senior caps in the starting lineup, a number that grew to 15 by the final whistle.

Baldini himself was also making his debut in this role, having been promoted from the Under-21 position to serve as interim head coach for this friendly and the upcoming match against Greece. This interim appointment followed Gennaro Gattuso’s resignation and the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup play-offs, prompting Baldini to select a youthful squad.

Baldini Nurtures Young Italian Talent

“I was aware of the quality these young players possess, but I also recognized the inherent risks due to the sheer number of debutants,” Baldini told RAI Sport. “We saw a great passion for the national team from many Italians today. While nothing is guaranteed, I had a sense that things would go our way this evening.”

Despite creating several opportunities and hitting the woodwork through Niccolò Pisilli, Italy’s attacking output against Luxembourg was limited.

“The team managed to create some attacking sequences, but they are certainly capable of much more,” Baldini continued. “While some tactical understanding can come naturally, many of the necessary movements weren’t executed in the first half, making it difficult to find scoring positions.”

When asked about his feelings regarding his own debut on the senior Italy bench, even in an interim capacity, Baldini responded thoughtfully.

“To be honest, I’m a bit of an unusual person, but when it comes to matches, I rarely feel overly emotional. My primary concern is ensuring I can be of service to these players,” the Under-21 coach admitted. “A coach’s role isn’t just about tactical positioning; it’s about conveying the right message at the right time. A misplaced word can be detrimental, disrupting the team’s rhythm. My worry is about being truly helpful.”
