Mirwan Suwarso, the President of Como, has admitted that the club’s qualification for the Champions League has been a surprising achievement, even for himself. He also shared his thoughts on the future prospects of Cesc Fabregas and Nico Paz.
The Italian club, which was in Serie C when Indonesian businessman Mirwan Suwarso and his family took over and initiated a rebuilding process, has experienced a remarkably swift ascent. Within just two years of their promotion from Serie B, Como now finds itself in fourth place in Serie A, securing a coveted spot in Europe’s premier club competition.
Suwarso on Como’s Unexpected Rise
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Suwarso described the journey as “very unique.” He elaborated, “We came in with perhaps a 5-10 year plan, the goal to be in Europe was always the longer one, but it surprised even us that we achieved it earlier than scheduled. Obviously, that is because of so many people working on it together and achieving it together.”
A pivotal figure in this success has been coach Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas transitioned from player to manager, even taking on the coaching role before officially obtaining his badges. His involvement was so integral that he even collaborated with architects on the training ground design. Furthermore, he contributed investment alongside former teammates.
“Having people like Cesc, Thierry Henry, and Raphael Varane involved, we are talking about three winners who brought in a culture of winning to our environment,” Suwarso added. “The thing that is most recognized is our belief; we know everything is possible, and there is a contagious atmosphere.”
While there has been considerable speculation about numerous major clubs vying to recruit Fabregas, Como acknowledges that they cannot prevent him from leaving if he wishes to. “Only he controls his future. None of us would ever know one’s own destiny, so it’s up to Cesc what he wants to do.”
The situation surrounding Nico Paz presents a more complex scenario. Como acquired the player from Real Madrid for €6 million, but Real Madrid retains an option to buy him back for a sum up to €11 million. This leaves uncertainty about whether the Argentine will remain with Como or return to Madrid.
Responding to questions about Nico Paz’s future, Suwarso stated, “Only Real Madrid can answer that because we own the player, but everybody knows Real Madrid have a buy-back clause on him. We always try to look at life in a very positive manner, so maybe two years ago we could never have a player like Nico with us. Due to Madrid’s generosity, to give us a loan and then pay us, it’s a good deal.”
