Alex Dunne Secures Surprise Sprint Podium Through Patience and Experience

Starting from eighth position in today's Formula 2 Sprint due to the reverse-grid format, Alex Dunne had modest expectations, primarily focusing on a strong performance in tomorrow's Feature race where he will begin in third. Yet, in an unexpected turn, the young Irish driver remarkably secured a podium finish in today's Sprint event.

Crucial Role of Experience

Dunne approached the race without lofty expectations for his final position. His strategy involved managing the race and gathering data to enhance his understanding of his Rodin car's performance ahead of the upcoming Feature race. Having finished fifth in his 2025 rookie campaign, Dunne had previously expressed his ambition to contend for the F2 championship. While today's outcome was an unexpected delight, he credits it largely to the invaluable experience accumulated during his debut season.

“Honestly, I never imagined starting from P8 and ending up on the podium again,” Dunne remarked. “I don't believe we strictly had the pace for a third-place finish. Instead, much of it came down to leveraging my experience from last year, being more cautious and strategically smarter at the start, and then pushing hard as the race progressed and opportunities arose.”

Strategic Decision-Making

Having accumulated considerable experience throughout his career, Dunne demonstrated a shrewd ability to choose his moments. Upon learning his teammate, Martinius Stenshorne, had incurred a five-second penalty, Dunne opted to conserve his tires and strategically follow, recognizing that attempting to overtake his penalized teammate would carry more risk than potential reward.

“When I was behind Martinius, the team informed me about his five-second penalty,” Dunne explained. “At that point, I eased off slightly and focused on tyre management. There was no sense in aggressively trying to pass him and potentially losing time for both of us. My approach was to be smart; whenever he made a move on the car ahead, I often just followed suit and capitalized on the developing situation.”

Composure Leads to Podium Success

The race, punctuated by several restarts, offered numerous chances for drivers to aggressively challenge their competitors. While such moves carry inherent risks, drivers are often willing to take them in pursuit of championship points. However, drawing upon his insights from the previous season, Dunne meticulously selected his moments to advance through the field.

“After the final restart, that’s when things really opened up and everyone became quite aggressive, pushing to gain every possible advantage,” Dunne elaborated. “I focused on applying my experience as effectively as possible, learning from last year. My aim this season is greater consistency and securing points whenever possible. But it’s also crucial to recognize opportunities to be more assertive and make progress when they arise.”

Marking a highly successful start to his 2026 campaign, Alex Dunne claimed a third-place podium finish, significantly contributing to his championship aspirations. With a third-place starting position for tomorrow's Feature Race, he is poised for another potential podium, which would yield considerably more championship points.
