Recent reports indicate that Massimiliano Allegri is the frontrunner to become the next head coach of the Italian national football team, provided Giovanni Malagò is elected as the President of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Further updates suggest that Claudio Ranieri might also be considered for a role within the Azzurri setup.
The positions of Italy’s head coach and FIGC President have become vacant following the recent resignations of Gennaro Gattuso and Gabriele Gravina, which occurred shortly after the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Additionally, Gianluigi Buffon has stepped down from his role as Italy’s head of delegation.
Currently, there appears to be a direct contest for both the head coach and FIGC President positions. Massimiliano Allegri and former Italy head coach Antonio Conte are considered the leading candidates to succeed Gattuso, while Giovanni Malagò and Giancarlo Abete are vying to replace Gravina.
On Monday, Malagò secured the support of 18 out of 20 Serie A clubs in anticipation of the FIGC elections scheduled for June 22. Reports from various Italian media outlets suggest that if the former CONI President Malagò is elected, Allegri would become the favored choice to lead the Italian national team.
According to insights from Tuttosport, Claudio Ranieri could also potentially be integrated into this structure as the technical director for the Italian national team. The Turin-based publication speculates that Ranieri could act as a liaison between the senior national team and its various youth squads.
It’s worth noting that Ranieri was also among the individuals considered for the head coach position before Gattuso’s appointment last summer, following Luciano Spalletti’s departure.
Ranieri is presently serving as a senior advisor to his beloved club, Roma. However, recent reports suggest growing internal disagreements within the Giallorossi camp, particularly between Ranieri and head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. This situation might compel the club’s owners to make a significant decision as the season nears its conclusion.
