Juventus Eyes Benfica Defender Antonio Silva Amid Bernardo Pursuit

Sport news

Juventus is reportedly targeting multiple key players this summer, with strong interest in Benfica’s center-back Antonio Silva, in addition to their well-known pursuit of Manchester City’s departing midfielder, Bernardo Silva.

According to Portuguese publication A Bola, Juventus’s interest in the 22-year-old defender is long-standing and substantial. Agent Jorge Mendes had confirmed as early as December 2024 that both parties were keen on a transfer, publicly stating, “Antonio Silva wants Juventus, and Juventus want Antonio Silva; it’s up to Benfica to decide.”

Benfica president Rui Costa initially blocked the move, but the circumstances have since shifted in favor of Juventus.

Antonio Silva Open to Juventus Move After Difficult Season on Benfica’s Bench

The Portugal international has reportedly become increasingly frustrated at Benfica, having spent a significant portion of the season as the third-choice center-back, behind Nicolas Otamendi and Tomas Araujo. His contract renewal negotiations have stalled, with the player dissatisfied with how the process has been managed. He is seeking sporting assurances that Benfica is currently unable to provide, especially given the uncertainty surrounding their coaching situation for the upcoming season.

Benfica plans to try and renew his contract, which expires in 2027, and may offer a salary of approximately €2 million net per season. However, financial incentives alone are unlikely to be enough to retain him.

Newcastle United had previously made an offer of €35 million plus €15 million in bonuses for the defender in 2024 but were unsuccessful. This fee might be difficult to match given his diminished role this past season.

For Juventus, acquiring Antonio Silva would address a clear need in their defense. His potential arrival would complement their ongoing efforts to sign Bernardo Silva, whom Juventus hopes to acquire on a free transfer from Manchester City, although this deal remains dependent on securing Champions League qualification in the final match of the season.
