Reports from Italy confirm that former Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric will undergo surgery following a severe head injury sustained during the 0-0 draw between Milan and Juventus on Sunday evening. The incident occurred during a mid-air challenge for a header with Italy international Manuel Locatelli in the second half of the match at San Siro.
According to updates from Sky Sport Italia, Modric suffered a fracture to his left cheekbone as a result of the collision. He was voted Milan’s man of the match in the game against Juventus. Following medical examinations on Monday, it has been reported that he will have surgery on his fractured cheekbone in the coming hours.
The extent to which this injury will affect Modric’s availability for Milan’s remaining four Serie A fixtures this season remains unconfirmed. The Rossoneri’s upcoming matches include an away game against Sassuolo on Sunday, a home fixture against Atalanta on May 10, an away match against Genoa on May 17, and a final home game against Cagliari on May 24.
Modric’s current contract with Milan is in its final months, having initially signed a one-year deal at the start of the 2025-26 season, with an option for a further 12-month extension. Despite his age, the 40-year-old has been a crucial player for Milan throughout the 2025-26 Serie A campaign. He has been included in the matchday squad for all 34 league games, started in 32 of them, and has only been an unused substitute on one occasion.
