The PGA Tour makes its highly anticipated return to Miami this week with the inaugural Cadillac Championship. This prestigious event will host a select field of 72 elite players from the last two seasons, all vying for a substantial share of the $20 million prize money.
Leading the charge is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, accompanied by reigning Tour Championship winner Tommy Fleetwood and Adam Scott, a past champion at this venue ten years ago. The tournament also boasts a strong lineup of major winners, including Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry, and Justin Rose.
However, some prominent names will be absent from the competition. Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre, Ludvig Aberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick, all currently ranked within the top 15 of the Official World Golf Rankings, have opted out.
This marks the 56th occasion the PGA Tour has held an event at this location. Notably, this is the second consecutive Signature Event that Rory McIlroy will miss, having also skipped the RBC Heritage the week after his second Masters victory.
While many professional golfers are accustomed to playing three consecutive weeks, it appears these particular players have chosen to prioritize other commitments over this event.
The decision to take a week off before the Cadillac Championship is understandable, given its placement just prior to another elevated event, the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow. This is immediately followed by the PGA Championship at Aronimink, located in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
The historic Doral Hotel and Golf Club, originally opened during the presidency of John F. Kennedy, hosted PGA Tour events for 45 consecutive years, from 1962 to 2006. Following the introduction of the FedEx Cup, the renowned Blue Monster Course continued to host World Golf Championship events until 2016.
Four years prior to the WGC’s departure, the Trump Organization acquired the renowned facility out of bankruptcy for $150 million. The property was subsequently renamed Trump National Doral Miami, and the organization invested $250 million in renovations over an 800-acre resort a decade ago.
Cadillac’s decision not to renew its title sponsorship of the WGC, coupled with controversial remarks made by Donald Trump regarding immigrants and calls for travel bans, was viewed as conflicting with the PGA Tour’s commitment to an inclusive environment.
At the time, Commissioner Tim Finchem attributed the situation to funding challenges rather than politics. The difficulty in securing a sponsor was significantly influenced by the Doral brand’s association with Donald Trump.
The PGA Tour’s announcement in 2025 that this week’s tournament would be added to the schedule, even before Cadillac’s return as title sponsor, signaled a reconciliation and acceptance.
A palpable sense of excitement has permeated Miami since the tournament’s inclusion was confirmed.
Doral Mayor Christi Fraga stated, “Golf has always been central to our city’s narrative, and for many decades, the Tour played a crucial role in putting Doral on the map.”
Dave Mack, Vice President and Executive Director, who transitioned from a 13-year career with the Miami Dolphins to help launch and grow this event, commented, “It will be a vibrant week filled with incredible golf and an electrifying atmosphere, and we eagerly anticipate celebrating the Tour’s return to Miami alongside the community.”
The tournament is also set to offer a diverse range of family-oriented activities and fan-centric experiences.

Scottie Scheffler Leads the PGA Tour’s Return to Miami This Week
The inaugural Cadillac Championship will feature a limited field of 72 top players from the past two seasons, competing for a share of a $20 million purse.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be in action, along with reigning Tour Championship winner Tommy Fleetwood and Adam Scott, who won here ten years ago, the last time the PGA Tour held an event in Doral. They’ll be joined by a slew of headliners, including major winners Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry, and Justin Rose.
Notable absences include Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre, Ludvig Aberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick — all ranked in the top 15 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
This marks the 56th time the PGA Tour has played here and the second consecutive Signature Event that McIlroy will miss, following his bypass of the RBC Heritage a week after claiming his second career Masters Tournament.
Many pros don’t mind playing three weeks in a row, but those mentioned apparently prefer it not to be a major event.
One can understand the voluntary bye week, as the Cadillac Championship precedes another elevated event, the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow, which is immediately followed by the PGA Championship at Aronimink in the Philadelphia suburbs.
The original Doral Hotel and Golf Club opened during John F. Kennedy’s presidency, and the Tour held an event here for 45 consecutive years, from 1962 to 2006. The following season, the FedEx Cup was introduced, and the Blue Monster Course hosted a World Golf Championship event through 2016.
Four years earlier, this famed facility was acquired out of bankruptcy by the Trump Organization for $150 million, and, as you might expect, the property was subsequently renamed Trump National Doral Miami. The company completed a $250 million renovation of the 800-acre resort a decade ago.
Cadillac elected not to renew its title sponsorship of the WGC. That, combined with Trump’s inflammatory remarks about immigrants and calls for a ban on some entering the U.S., was characterized as inconsistent with the PGA Tour’s commitment to an inclusive environment.
Then Commissioner Tim Finchem cited funding issues rather than politics, and the inability to find a suitable sponsor at the time was heavily influenced by the Doral brand’s association with Donald Trump.
It was clear that time had healed old wounds when the Tour announced in 2025 that this week’s tournament would be added to the schedule, even before Cadillac returned as title sponsor.
Excitement in Miami has been in the air since that decision was made.
“Golf has always been at the heart of our city’s story, and for decades, the Tour played a key role in putting Doral on the map,” said Doral Mayor Christi Fraga.
“It’ll be a vibrant week featuring incredible golf and an electric atmosphere, and we can’t wait to celebrate the Tour’s return to Miami alongside the community,” said Vice President and Executive Director Dave Mack, who left a 13-year career with the Miami Dolphins to help launch and grow this event.
The tournament is also planning a variety of family-focused and fan-first experiences for attendees.
