Malagò hints at ex-Italy player for FIGC presidency, deflects Allegri questions

Giovanni Malagò, a prominent figure expected to contend for the FIGC Presidential elections, has hinted at the inclusion of a former Italian national team player in his forthcoming plans. However, he deliberately avoided addressing questions concerning Massimiliano Allegri’s potential involvement.

The upcoming FIGC Presidential elections on June 22 are anticipated to feature only two candidates: Malagò and Giancarlo Abete. Malagò has garnered support from a majority of Serie A clubs and intends to present his program during a meeting with them on April 20.

“I am conducting thorough and considered evaluations,” Malagò stated during an event in Milan on Thursday, as reported by TMW. “Serie A initiated this idea, but it’s crucial to also listen to all other stakeholders.”

Malagò confirmed his meetings with the presidents of the Italian footballers’ and coaches’ associations, entities that collectively hold 30% of the voting power in the FIGC Presidential election. “I can describe the discussions as very positive and proactive. I can say the initial conditions are favorable,” he commented.

Italian news outlets have suggested that Malagò plans to bring a former Italy international player into his administration if he secures the presidency, with reports indicating that Milan coach Allegri is his primary choice for the national team’s coaching position.

“I can honestly say I have no specific individual in mind at this moment. I believe, as is common in many Federations, that having a former athlete involved in a role is beneficial,” Malagò remarked. “Whether this will be feasible or not remains to be seen.”

“If I were to say anything more or less [regarding Allegri], it would all be taken out of context,” he added. “I will not comment on any specific individual, and believe me, I have not discussed this with anyone.”

Corriere dello Sport has reported that Allegri would be open to the prospect of managing the Italian national team, particularly given the strained relationship he reportedly has with some members of the AC Milan management.
