Nico Gonzalez’s Future Uncertain as Atletico Madrid Unlikely to Meet Buy Clause

Sport news

Reports from Italy suggest that Atletico Madrid is unlikely to exercise their conditional obligation to purchase Juventus-owned winger Nico Gonzalez. This leaves his future uncertain, with speculation about whether he will remain in Spain, return to Serie A, or seek opportunities elsewhere this summer.

Nico Gonzalez is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid from Juventus, with a deal that includes a conditional obligation to buy. The transfer involved a €1 million loan fee, potentially rising to €1 million in bonuses, and a conditional buy-out clause set at €32 million.

Recent updates indicate that Atletico Madrid would trigger the obligation to buy clause if Gonzalez plays at least 45 minutes in 60% of the La Liga matches he has been available for. As he was still a Juventus player for the initial three La Liga fixtures of the 2025-26 season, he needs to feature for 45 minutes or more in 21 league games this season to meet this 60% threshold.

Currently, Nico Gonzalez has made 22 appearances in La Liga this season but has only played for 45 minutes or more in 15 of those matches. This means he must play at least 45 minutes in six of Atletico’s remaining seven La Liga games to achieve the required percentage. This scenario appears improbable, especially since he has only played 45+ minutes in four league matches since the start of the new year. Atletico is scheduled to play Elche on Wednesday evening.

With Atletico Madrid seemingly unlikely to meet the €32 million buy-out obligation, Nico Gonzalez’s future has become somewhat uncertain. However, there are reports suggesting that Atletico is still interested in retaining his services for the 2026-27 season and may aim to negotiate a reduced transfer fee with Juventus during the summer transfer window.

Juventus needs to recoup just over €20 million to avoid incurring a capital loss on the Argentine international. Reports from Calciomercato.com suggest that both clubs might reach a compromise, agreeing on a fee somewhere between €20 million and €32 million.

Nevertheless, if an agreement cannot be reached, there is a possibility that Nico Gonzalez could return to Juventus and compete for a place in the squad under Luciano Spalletti for the 2026-27 season.
