MMA news

Malissa Sherwood, a trailblazing figure in women’s mixed martial arts, has passed away at the age of 50 following a fight with cancer. News of the former professional MMA competitor’s death emerged on social media earlier this week.

“The wrestling community has lost one of its pioneers for women in the sport,” wrote Afsoon Roshan Johnston on Facebook. “Malissa Sherwood was a formidable competitor who paved the way for countless girls in wrestling. We will honor her memory, and she will be inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame on May 2. Rest in peace, Malissa.”

Tonya Evinger, a former Invicta FC champion and UFC competitor, also shared her sorrow over the passing of her friend.

“Today is a somber day. Rest easy, Malissa Sherwood. I hope you had a wonderful journey. I will always cherish you.”

Malissa Sherwood concluded her professional MMA career with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses, having competed between 2006 and 2010. She was an alumna of Missouri Valley College and Sierra College.

Sherwood’s wrestling achievements began much earlier, from 1995 to 2004, during which time she was a member of the US National, World, and Olympic Development Teams. Her impressive accolades include being an 8-time Senior US National Runner-Up, an 8-time Senior World Team Runner-Up, the Pan American Champion in 1999, and a multiple-time University Champion and NAIA Champion. She was also the first woman to receive a full scholarship to Missouri Valley College and was associated with the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club.
