Luca Reggiani experienced a brief senior international debut for Italy against Greece on Sunday. Introduced as a substitute in the second half, the Borussia Dortmund defender was controversially sent off with a straight red card merely 13 minutes after entering the field.
The 18-year-old defender was brought on in the 55th minute to replace the injured Pietro Comuzzo. However, his maiden appearance for the senior Azzurri team was abruptly halted after just 13 minutes of play.
Reggiani was dismissed for pulling back the shirt of Anastasios Douvikas, an action that prevented the Como forward from reaching a long pass. Despite the foul occurring near the halfway line, Reggiani was the last defender between Douvikas and the Italian goal, leading referee Yigal Frid to issue a direct red card.
This incident marks Reggiani as the 17th player to make his debut for Italy under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini over the past two matches. Following his dismissal, Baldini offered a supportive hug to Reggiani as he left the field.
Earlier in March, Reggiani had achieved a record by becoming the youngest Italian player to score a goal in the Bundesliga.
